Beautiful édition
A beautifully presented and reliable edition of one of Beethoven's truly unique piano sonatas.

Theses editions are a joy to sight read from
Theses editions are a joy to sight read from. The paper is cream which reduces glare, the lay out is clear and Beethoven's markings appear easier to read even in the more difficult passages.

Strangely cramped layout
Henle Urtext is usually top of the class, but I found this one a disappointment. It has all the usual qualities - good paper, nice printing, well bound, scholarly notes - but some of the music was cramped. I have the Appassionata in two Associated Board editions and a third from another publisher, and I have to say that these give the notes more space, especially in the first movement, making them easier to follow. It's not a major issue for 'proper' pianists - once you have learnt it, who needs the sheet music? - but for the rest of us, for whom every little helps, I am surprised that Henle decided to save a page or two in this way. The fingering is interesting, though. Overall this is still a good choice, but you may find the current AB edition a little more user friendly.
